Ragweed (W1) is a laboratory test that measures allergen-specific IgE antibodies to ragweed pollen (Ambrosia artemisiifolia), one of the most potent seasonal allergens. The test helps identify sensitization to ragweed and determine the possible cause of allergic symptoms occurring during the pollen season. Test results should be interpreted in conjunction with the patient's clinical history and symptoms.

Indications

The test is recommended for individuals who experience the following symptoms during the ragweed pollen season:

  • frequent sneezing;
  • watery nasal discharge or nasal congestion;
  • itching of the nose, eyes, or throat;
  • watery, red eyes;
  • cough, wheezing, or worsening asthma symptoms during the pollen season;
  • suspected seasonal allergic rhinitis or allergic conjunctivitis.

Method

Determination of allergen-specific IgE antibodies to Ragweed (W1) by immunoassay.

Procedure

The test is performed using a venous blood sample. The laboratory measures the presence and concentration of allergen-specific IgE antibodies to ragweed pollen. The detection of these antibodies indicates sensitization to this allergen; however, the results should always be interpreted together with the patient's clinical symptoms and medical history.

Preparation:

  • No special preparation is required.
  • Fasting before blood collection is not required.
  • The use of antihistamines does not affect the test result, as the analysis is performed on a blood sample and measures allergen-specific IgE antibodies.
  • Patients are advised to inform their physician about any medications they are taking and their allergy history to ensure accurate interpretation of the results.
