Digital mammography is a modern radiological method used to visualize and study the structure of the breasts. It uses digital detectors to obtain images, which are then processed and analyzed with the help of computer technologies. Digital mammography provides high-clarity images, allowing accurate identification of breast abnormalities such as tumors, cysts, or other formations at an early stage, thus contributing to timely diagnosis and treatment of breast conditions.

Digital mammography can be performed as part of breast cancer screening in asymptomatic women or as a diagnostic procedure in the presence of clinical signs or suspected pathology. It is often included in a comprehensive breast assessment alongside inspection, palpation, and other investigations.

Procedure

During digital mammography, the patient stands or sits, and the breast is positioned on a special plate. Another plate gently compresses the breast to evenly distribute the tissue and obtain clear images. The procedure may cause temporary discomfort but lasts only a few minutes. The physician or radiologist will take multiple X-rays from different angles to achieve a complete view of the breast.
