Apolipoprotein B (Apo B) is the main structural protein of atherogenic lipoproteins, including LDL cholesterol (“bad cholesterol”), VLDL, and other particles involved in transporting cholesterol to tissues.
Apo B levels reflect the total number of atherogenic lipoprotein particles in the blood and may provide a more accurate assessment of the risk of developing atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases compared with traditional lipid profile parameters.
An increased Apo B level indicates a higher number of particles capable of entering the arterial wall and contributing to the formation of atherosclerotic plaques. This test is useful both for cardiovascular risk assessment and for monitoring the effectiveness of cholesterol-lowering therapy.
Indications
Apo B testing is recommended:
- for global cardiovascular risk assessment and evaluation of atherosclerosis risk;
- in individuals with cardiovascular risk factors (high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, obesity, smoking, family history of cardiovascular disease);
- for patients with a history of cardiovascular disease or atherosclerosis;
- when LDL-cholesterol levels may not fully reflect the actual cardiovascular risk;
- for patients with elevated triglycerides or lipid metabolism disorders;
- for monitoring the effectiveness of lipid-lowering therapy.
Test method
Measurement of apolipoprotein B concentration in blood is performed using the immunoturbidimetric method (or another validated immunochemical method depending on the laboratory platform used).
The method is based on the specific reaction between antibodies and apolipoprotein B molecules in the blood sample, allowing quantitative measurement of its level.
Procedure
The test is performed by collecting a venous blood sample.
The sample is analyzed in the laboratory to determine Apo B concentration. The result is interpreted by a physician together with other lipid profile parameters and individual cardiovascular risk factors.
