The consultation with an epileptologist is a specialized medical evaluation of patients with suspected epilepsy or other paroxysmal neurological disorders. The epileptologist is responsible for diagnosing seizure types and establishing appropriate treatment.
Indications
- episodes of unexplained loss of consciousness
- convulsive seizures or paroxysmal motor events
- sudden “blanking out” episodes (absences)
- suspected epilepsy in children or adolescents
- recurrent neurological paroxysmal events
- post-traumatic seizure episodes
- sleep disturbances with suspected epileptic activity
- first-time seizure episode
Procedure
- detailed medical history
- neurological examination
- review of previous investigations (EEG, MRI, labs)
- classification of seizure type
- recommendation of additional tests
- preliminary diagnosis
- initiation or adjustment of therapy
- follow-up plan
