Breast elastography is a modern ultrasound-based diagnostic method that evaluates the elasticity (stiffness) of breast tissues and helps identify areas with altered structure.

The examination is performed as a complementary method to standard breast ultrasound and allows the physician to better characterize detected lesions: assess their density, structural features, and the likelihood of benign or malignant changes.

The results are assessed according to the international BI-RADS (Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System) classification, which standardizes the description of breast findings and helps determine further diagnostic or follow-up management.

Indications

Breast elastography may be recommended in the following situations:

• detection of nodules, cysts, or areas of tissue thickening during breast ultrasound;
• need for additional evaluation of a detected lesion;
• suspicion of benign or malignant tissue changes;
• changes in the shape, structure, or density of the breast tissue;
• breast pain, discomfort, or a palpable lump;
• nipple discharge;
• enlarged axillary lymph nodes;
• monitoring previously detected lesions over time;
• preventive screening in women over 40 years of age or those with risk factors.

Procedure / Duration

The examination is performed using an ultrasound transducer.

During the procedure, the physician applies a special gel to the breast skin and scans the tissues. If required, elastography is performed to assess tissue stiffness using special ultrasound modes.

The procedure:

• is painless;
• does not require medication administration or needle procedures;
• is performed in a lying position.

Examination duration: approximately 15–30 minutes, depending on the extent of the examination and the findings identified.

Limitations

• Elastography is an additional diagnostic method and does not replace mammography, ultrasound, or biopsy when these are medically indicated.
• The accuracy of the assessment depends on the quality of the equipment, the physician’s experience, and the characteristics of the examined lesion.
• In cases of significant inflammation, trauma, or recent surgery, the results may require additional interpretation.
• The decision regarding further investigations is made by the physician based on the examination results and clinical information.

Contraindications

Breast elastography has practically no absolute contraindications.

The examination may be limited in cases of:

• skin lesions in the examined area (open wounds, severe inflammation);
• inability to maintain the required position during the procedure;
• individual intolerance to ultrasound gel (very rare).

The method is safe and may be used, when medically indicated, including in pregnant and breastfeeding women.
