Ultrasound examination of the abdomen and kidneys in children aged 2–4 years

Ultrasound examination of the abdominal organs and kidneys is a non-invasive and painless method for evaluating the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, and kidneys. The examination allows assessment of the structure, size, and sonographic appearance of the organs, as well as detection of changes that may require further medical evaluation.

Indications

The examination may be recommended in the following cases:

• abdominal pain;
• nausea, vomiting, or recurrent digestive disorders;
• abdominal bloating or discomfort;
• abnormalities detected in laboratory test results;
• urinary changes or suspected kidney disorders;
• monitoring of previously diagnosed conditions;
• preventive evaluation upon a physician’s recommendation.

Limitations

The quality of the examination may be affected by the presence of intestinal gas and food contents in the stomach and intestines. Ultrasound findings are interpreted in correlation with the child’s symptoms, medical history, and, when necessary, the results of other investigations.

Procedure

The child is positioned on the examination table, and the physician applies a special gel to the abdominal area. A transducer is then used to examine the abdominal organs and kidneys. The examination is painless and generally takes approximately 15–20 minutes, depending on the child’s individual characteristics and ability to cooperate.
