The Ionogram is a laboratory test panel designed to assess the body's electrolyte and mineral balance. The profile measures the concentrations of the main electrolytes and minerals essential for the normal function of the nervous, muscular, and cardiovascular systems, as well as for maintaining fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balance.

This profile is recommended for general health assessment, detection of electrolyte imbalances, and monitoring of patients with chronic diseases or those receiving treatments that may affect mineral metabolism.

Indications

  • muscle weakness, cramps, or spasms;
  • persistent fatigue;
  • heart rhythm disturbances;
  • dehydration or significant fluid loss (vomiting, diarrhea);
  • kidney or endocrine disorders;
  • monitoring therapy with diuretics or other medications affecting electrolyte balance;
  • preventive health screening.

Profile Components

  • Iron (Fe) – an essential trace element involved in oxygen transport and hemoglobin synthesis.
  • Total Calcium (serum) – essential for bone health, muscle contraction, nerve impulse transmission, and blood clotting.
  • Magnesium (Mg) – participates in numerous enzymatic reactions and is essential for normal muscle and nervous system function.
  • Potassium (K) – a key electrolyte required for proper muscle, heart, and nerve function.
  • Sodium (Na) – the main extracellular electrolyte involved in maintaining fluid balance and blood pressure.
  • Phosphorus (P) – contributes to the formation of bones and teeth and plays an important role in energy metabolism.
  • Chloride (Cl) – an electrolyte essential for maintaining acid-base and fluid-electrolyte balance.

Method of Investigation

The tests are performed using a venous blood sample and modern laboratory methods that ensure high accuracy and reproducibility.

Procedure

A venous blood sample is collected for the analysis. The procedure takes only a few minutes and is performed by qualified healthcare professionals.

Preparation:

  • Blood collection is recommended in the morning after 8–12 hours of fasting. Drinking plain water is allowed.
  • Avoid alcohol consumption and intense physical activity on the day before the test.
  • If you are taking mineral supplements, diuretics, or other medications that may affect electrolyte levels, inform your physician or healthcare professional. Do not discontinue your medication without medical advice.
