Uric acid (24 hour urine test)
We remind you that independent interpretation of the results is unacceptable, the information provided below is for reference purposes only.
The measurement of uric acid in 24-hour urine evaluates purine metabolism and renal excretion of uric acid. Uric acid is the final product of purine metabolism and is mainly eliminated through the kidneys.
The test is used for the diagnosis and monitoring of disorders associated with purine metabolism abnormalities and for assessing the risk of uric acid stone formation.
Indications
- diagnosis of gout
- urolithiasis
- suspected purine metabolism disorders
- monitoring treatment of hyperuricemia
- chronic kidney diseases
- assessment of uric acid stone risk
- monitoring metabolic disorders
Procedure
The test requires urine collected over a 24-hour period in a dedicated container. After collection is completed, the total urine volume is measured, and a portion of the sample is sent to the laboratory for quantitative uric acid determination.
