Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of interrelated metabolic disorders, including excess weight or obesity, high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar, and lipid abnormalities. It was previously considered a problem mainly in adults, but today it is increasingly observed in adolescents.
How does metabolic syndrome develop in adolescents?
The main causes are unbalanced nutrition, a sedentary lifestyle, and chronic stress. When an adolescent’s body receives too many calories and moves too little, insulin resistance develops, blood sugar and lipid levels rise, and the heart and blood vessels work harder. Metabolic syndrome does not always show clear symptoms. Sometimes parents notice only slight weight gain or fatigue in their child. If left unaddressed, this condition can lead to type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, fatty liver, and hormonal problems.
Who is at risk?
- Adolescents with excess weight or obesity, especially with abdominal fat accumulation.
- Those who are physically inactive and spend a lot of time on computers or phones.
- Children with a family history of diabetes, hypertension, or cardiovascular diseases.
- Adolescents with sleep disturbances or chronic stress.
How to protect your child
- Ensure balanced nutrition: less sugar and fast food, more vegetables, fruits, protein, and whole grains.
- Promote an active lifestyle: at least 1 hour of moderate physical activity every day.
- Regularly monitor weight, height, and blood pressure.
- Take care of sleep and stress: adolescents need 8–9 hours of sleep and safe ways to relax.
- If necessary – consult a doctor: tests for blood sugar, lipid profile, blood pressure, and insulin help detect problems early.
Metabolic syndrome in adolescents is not a verdict, but a signal from the body that should not be ignored. Early detection and lifestyle adjustments help prevent serious diseases in adulthood. Healthy habits, activity, and parental attention are the best ways to protect your child.
