Initial pediatric rheumatologist consultation
The consultation with a pediatric rheumatologist is a specialized medical evaluation of children and adolescents with suspected inflammatory, autoimmune, or degenerative diseases of the musculoskeletal system (joints, bones, muscles, and connective tissue).
The pediatric rheumatologist is responsible for diagnosing and treating rheumatologic conditions that may affect mobility, development, and overall function of the musculoskeletal system, with the aim of preventing complications and long-term joint damage.
Indications
- persistent arthralgia or myalgia
- joint stiffness, especially in the morning
- swelling, redness, or local warmth in a joint area
- reduced mobility or refusal to use a limb
- gait disturbances (limping)
- chronic fatigue associated with musculoskeletal symptoms
- prolonged fever of unknown origin
- suspected systemic autoimmune disease or chronic inflammatory condition
- family history of rheumatologic diseases
Procedure
- detailed medical history taking and review of the patient’s medical background
- complete pediatric rheumatologic physical examination
- assessment of joints, mobility, and signs of inflammation
- establishment of a preliminary clinical diagnosis
- recommendation of additional investigations (laboratory tests, imaging studies)
- development of an individualized treatment plan
Preparation:
- presentation of all relevant medical documents from the child’s medical history
- results of previous laboratory or imaging tests (if available)
- list of symptoms and their progression over time
- information about previous treatments received
